Cooper attended a conference on November 15 in Cambridge MA, US, sponsored by the Educational Divide Reform Institute and Global Governance and Human Security Program, UMASS Boston. He presented, “Waves of Informality in Indo-Pacific Institutions.”

October 2019:

Cooper attended the Cultural Diplomacy in the Age of Populism, Organized by the Center on Public Diplomacy, University of Southern California and hosted by the Canadian Embassy to Germany on October 31 in Berlin, Germany. He presented, “The Populist Challenge and the Domestic Turn in Diplomacy.”

Cooper attended the conference on October 24 and 25. The conference was on: “The Indo-Pacific and the Southern Oceans”, The Centre for North American Studies of the Pacific Studies Department, University of Guadalajara, Mexico, and the Australian and New Zealand Studies Association of North America (ANZSANA), Guadalajara, Mexico. March 2019:

* Cooper is the recipient of the Distinguished Scholar Award from the Diplomatic Studies Section, International Studies Association. As part of the award a special panel will take place at the Toronto 2019 conference: Thursday March 28, TD14: 4-5:45 pm, Sheraton A, Sheraton Centre Toronto.

The call for nominations read: The Diplomatic Studies Section of the International Studies Association is seeking nominations for a Distinguished Scholar Panel, to be held at the 2019 ISA Annual Convention in Toronto. We seek to recognize a scholar’s lifetime contribution to the study of diplomacy, broadly conceived. Ideal nominees will have made significant advances in diplomacy scholarship, as well as superlative records of service and mentorship within the wider academic community and/or the Diplomatic Studies Section. Nominees should be members of the International Studies Association.

February 2019:

* During January and February, Cooper was a Visiting Professor at Shiv Nadar University, Uttar Pradesh, India in the International Relations and Governance Studies department (picture 1 2014). His hosts included Dr. Jabin  Jacob, Associate Professor, and Dr. Siddharth Mallavarapu, Professor and Head of the department (picture 2 2029).

* Cooper also gave lectures at JNU, including one at the Centre for Canadian, US and Latin American Studies hosted by Drs. Priti Singh, Aprajita Kashyap, and Abdul Nafey (Picture 3 1988), and was present for the Republic Day ceremonies (picture 4, 2007).

November 2018:

October 2018:

* Cooper attended a conference in Bonn, Germany on 23 and 24 October: “The G20 @ 10:
Benefits, limitations and the future of global club governance in turbulent times.” He presented a paper: “The G20 is dead as a crisis/steering committee, long live the G20 as hybrid Focal Point.” And he also gave a keynote: “Re-examining the Agency of the Global South: contestation over hub/parallel institutions.”

* Cooper presented the keynote address, ‘Measuring Global Footprints across the BRICS/MIKTA cluster of ‘Rising’ Countries: Subjective Impressions/Objective Data,’ to the 27-28 September 2018, 6^th Blue Black Sea Congress: International Relations and the New World Order, at Marmara University, Istanbul, Turkey.

During the rest of the conference, Cooper met with a number of excellent faculty members (including Prof. Emel Parlar Dal) and graduate and undergraduate students (amid the wonders of Istanbul).

July 2018:

* Cooper took part in a variety of events in and around the ISA-FLACSO convention in Quito, Ecuador. On July 24 he participated in an all day Workshop on the Venezuela Crisis at FLACSO. And on July 25 he presented a revised version of his paper, “Ex-Leaders as Mediators in the Venezuelan Crisis: Potential and Limitations of ‘Clubs’ and ‘Networks’ beyond and from the region, took part in a (well attended) panel honouring Diana Tussie; and chaired a panel on “Small LAC states in global perspective: The shifting trajectory of vulnerability and resilience.”

* Cooper chaired a panel at BSIA with a paper by Zhu Jiejin, Associate Professor, School of International Relations and Public Affairs, Fudan University, on “Comparing the Operational Modalities of NDB and AIIB”, July 16th. *Cooper’s short article on diplomatic disintermediation was included in Bruce Gregory’s valuable update on public diplomacy resources. Cooper recently attended a workshop on ‘21st Century Diplomacy” organized by SWP in Berlin.

*An earlier collection co-edited by Cooper on Global Health Governance received added (albeit unusual) attention.

March 2017:

Cooper has been chosen as a guest editor for the special issue of International Journal on middle power diplomacy. “The largely Canadian readership of IJ has a natural interest in middle power diplomacy, and we have chosen to devote this special issue to that theme, under the guest editorship of Andrew Cooper of the University of Waterloo and Emel Parlar Dal of Marmara University. Their focus is on the MIKTA (Mexico, Indonesia, Korea, Turkey, and Australia) grouping of middle powers.

Cooper and Parlar Dal open with an introductory piece positioning what they see as the third wave of middle power diplomacy. This is followed by a solo article by Cooper in which he assesses the capability of middle powers to act collectively in a world where power has become diffused. Then, Günther Maihold looks at the case of Mexico, and Awidya Santikajaya that of Indonesia. Jongryn Mo examines South Korea’s diplomacy, Emel Parlar Dal and Ali Murat Kurşun that of Turkey, and Susan Harris Rimmer takes a look at the Australian example. Finally, Bruce Gilley examines what he sees as the delusions of grandeur that wait temptingly in the “Goldilocks Zone.”“

February 2017:

* Cooper’s working paper “The Disintermediation Dilemma and its Impact on Diplomacy” from the project: Diplomacy in 21st Century was published by German Institute for International and Security Affairs.

* Cooper attends “Vision 20 2017 and the German G-20 Summit” meeting in Washington DC on February 27 2017 attended by a wide ranging group of experts with expertise on the G20 process.

Cooper’s brilliant book—one that will be of interest to scholars and students of IR, diplomacy, and foreign policy—chronicles the importance of leaders—particularly highly successful and transformational leaders such as Bill Clinton, Mikhail Gorbachev, Jimmy Carter, Nelson Mandela, and Tony Blair—once they have retired from official public office but have not yet faded away from policymaking and the construction of international politics. Cooper notes in the opening pages “that the contributions of these former leaders need to be recognized and examined seriously as operational boundary-spanners” (p. vi). No longer in policy offices, but clearly still having effects on policy, Cooper contends that these types of former leaders are best thought of as “hyper-empowered individuals” (p. vii); put into the context of a theory of agency, these are individuals who, perhaps given their liminal status, are in a particularly powerful position to transcend the limitations of structure and affect outcomes. *Andrew Cooper will be presenting a paper with Asif Farooq at the international conference on Promoting Democracy: What Roles for the Emerging Powers? The conference will be held at the University of Ottawa on 15-16 October. It is organized by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the German Development Institute (GDI). A book launch event for the Oxford Handbook of Modern Diplomacy took place in Mexico City on July 22, 2013 with the presence of Dr. Jose Antonio Meade (Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Mexico), Dr. Andrew F. Andrew Cooper has been invited to serve as a member of the Caribbean Journal of International Relations and Diplomacy’s Editorial Board The Caribbean Journal of International Relations & Diplomacy is a collaborative effort between the Institute of International Relations at the University of the West Indies and the Trinidad & Tobago Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

May 2013:

A book launch event was held in New York on June 26th, 2013 at the American Society. Jorge Heine, Heraldo Munoz, Richard Feinberg, Andrew Cooper and Christopher Sabatini appeared in a photo session during the successful book launch.

May 2013:

Already in 2013, two book projects that I have been involved in have appeared in print. The most ambitious of these is The Oxford Handbook of Modern Diplomacy that is being launched in multiple sites. I have also co-authored the first stand-alone book on the G20, with a Foreword by the Rt. Hon. Paul Martin.
